Although the Ames rifleman's knife of 1849 had been in service for some time by the out break of the Civil War was it still in use during the Civil War? Many state armories would have still had some of the older rifles these were intended to be issued with and early in the War some of the rifles would have been used. Were any of these rifleman's knives seen in Civil War images?
