I am a new member who's interest in Civil War history goes back to the mid 1960's when as a Boy Scout hiked at Shiloh and Chickamauga Battlefields. Shortly after that I learned that my grandfather had a 1841 Ames Cutlass that supposedly was carried by my great great grandfather. Now I am trying to learn more about the sword and it's history since it came into my possession. I am trying to find the significance of the numbers that are stamped into the handle. I have been told that the number 12 is the rack number but what would the number 74 represent? The sword has been authenticated at the National Confederate Navel Museum in Columbus, Georgia. Does anyone know if this number would represent the ship that this sword was on or any other ideas of what it might represent?

A pretty piece. I wouldn't think the 74 a ship number and I'll have to check Hickox about contracts but that number seems to predate the 12 on the guard.

Cheers

These pieces often seem to have multiple numbers. As Glen noted with your example, the numbers often appear, based on wear, to have been stamped at different times. My understanding has always been these were all rack numbers, and the multiple numbers were the result of the sword having been reissued during its service life to different ships. I have no documentary evidence for this, so it is largely just speculation.

These are rack and ships inventory # I have done extensive research and there is NO comprehensive list that I could find that show which ships they were assigned to.
