In an April 1861 speech to the 6th MA Infantry, Gov. John Andrew described the soldiers as defenders of the "American Confederate Union." (Mentioned in Gathering To Save The Nation, p. 46, apparently citing a dissertation by John Hamrogue)
I've never heard the USA/North/Union refered to as "Confederate Union" (maybe by someone speaking of the Articles of Confederation?) and the term seems all the more surprising from a staunch Unionist.
Is anyone familiar with Gov. Andrew and can say whether this reflects some peculiar political view of his? Or was it a one time turn of phrase - perhaps he misspoke? Or was this term not as unusual for a Republican in 1860 as it seems?
