Amazing Mounted Cavalry Image

It would depend when in the War, if this is authentic, on the condition of the horse. If this is just the very beginning, the condition is very good. If this is towards the end, for the CSA side, it is quite remarkable to rare! But again, we don't know where this picture was taken and what forage was available. I'll say this, the horse looks like it's been on a very good pasture. It isn't shod which may be more common on the CSA side than Federal side. I can't see any bone splints along its legs, no chipped or cracked hoofs along the edge, no marks on the fur on the side we can see - no nicks, wounding, worn marks from equipment. Remarkable condition really.

He does seem to have an old scratch or halter mark on his face across the bridge of his nose and perhaps a scratch or old wound on his near shoulder? Also some signs of hard use indicated by windpuffs on both back ankles and an old sore (quite large, possibly an interference mark?) on the far rear pastern (the white one) midway between the fetlock and the hairline. Also some swelling on his near front leg, above the fetlock and along the lower cannon bone?

You've got eyes like an eagle, Laura! I now see the scratch or halter mark on the face, but not on the shoulder still. I didn't notice the windpuffs - I usually have to feel for those. I bow to your knowledge on the legs!

Hey @Johnny_Reb_1865, I hope @lelliott19 and I don't scare you off by going into the deep weeds on the horse and saddlery and stuff!

A year or two ago, someone posted an atypical horseshoe they found - only one they found - in the midwest in a known area that cavalry had been in. They wanted to know what kind of shoe it would have been and what it would have been used for. It wasn't lelliott19 but another horse person. We went so far into the weeds on that shoe that the person never responded and never posted again. I think we scared them off. . Don't let us scare you off!
