I'd imagine this one with the cannon would make an awesome colorized image if it hasn't been done already.

John Caldwell Tidball, West Point class of 1848 (classmate and friend of John Buford), of Cambridge, Ohio. Tidball was one of those enormously gifted Regular Army artillerists who contributed so very much to the ultimate Union victory in the Civil War. That battery, known as Tidball's battery before Tidball was promoted to command a brigade of horse artillery, is the same battery that Lt. John H. Calef served so effectively at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863.

Alf Pleasonton for once got it right when he noted that Tidball and Capt. James M. Robertson, who commanded the other brigade of horse artillery, "are now performing the duties of general officers with only the rank of captain, and I most urgently recommend that they be promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. The Artillery arm requires organization in the higher grades. There are no general officers who by their service are so much entitled to this distinction as Captains Robertson and Tidball."

He served in the Regular Army for 41 years, and was the commandant at West Point for many years. When he finally retired in 1889--still only a colonel in the Regular Army, but with brevets to major general--he was regarded as the Army's premier artillerist.

He wrote this excellent study of artillery in the Civil War that I commend to you (although it was originally serialized in The Army and Navy Journal and not published as a book): http://www.amazon.com/Artillery-Service-War-Rebellion-1861-65/dp/1594161496/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1458314829&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords="john+c.+tidball"

There's also this very good biography of him by a descendant: http://www.amazon.com/No-Disgrace-My-Country-Tidball/dp/0873387228/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458314829&sr=8-1&keywords="john+c.+tidball"

My favorite of his writings has not been published, which is his memoir of his time as a cadet at West Point.

Tidball is one of those largely forgotten heroes of the Union cause.

Is that a 3-incher?

I think @civilwarincolor has this colorized on his website

Yes indeed! You can find the image here. The image was also the cover for our 2015 calendar. We have a handful of them left on Ebay here for $3.99 each. It includes a 12 x 12" printed version with no text (in addition to the cover). There is also 11 other 12 x 12" images and another 12 smaller color images. If you are looking for this years calendar you can find it here.

My color version of the image of Lt. Clarke is used by Artilleryman magazine as part of their masthead. :smug:
