Anybody got anything on this one? This is a 1st cousin 4x removed. From what I can get on Ancestry he enrolled in the ANV in early 1864 in the 30th VA, Sparta Grays. He would have been either 17 or 18 at the time. He was born in 1846 but don't have the exact date. Looks like he was paroled in Ashland, VA. He's buried in Hollywood after living out some time at the end of his life at the Lee Camp in Richmond. Unfortunately at Hollywood all he has is a numbered marker. He was never married, never had kids.

There's nothing much to add to what you already know. Houston was born in Caroline County to James R. P. Houston and Elizabeth Gatewood in 1845. He enlisted in either 1863 or 1864 (al the official records show a February 1864 enlistment in Richmond, but Houston gives his first enlistment as 1863 in North Carolina. It maybe that he did serve a short time before joining the 30th VA in Richmond). He returned to Caroline County and farmed there until near the end of his life, when he entered the soldiers home in Richmond.

There are two pension applications online at Ancestry. In 1906 Houston says he is partially disabled from "piles and lameness from a fall during the war.' In 1915 he states he is totally disabled due to rheumatism - "can do nothing except in warm weather and very little then." He entered the soldiers home about December of 1913 and died there 5 November 1915. Cause of death was given as chronic nephritis. He was buried at Hollywood on the 7th of November.
