Sanitary lodge or home or rest was operated by the U.S. Sanitary Commission for traveling or disabled Union soldiers. There were 30 of them and they were closed at end of the war.

Thanks Jess! Love also Washington, circa 1860's, yet another file in 'docs' in my unber-unorganized computer. My grgrgrandparents lived there during the war, just has become a 'thing' to keep a look-out for pics and information! These may have been posted here somewhere previously, one is a shot of that huge Harewood Hospital, one the Commisary of Prisoner's building, and then the unfinished Washington Monument. Oh- the Sanitary Commision wagons going through the city. That's another historical marker which intrigues me- my grgrandfather worked as a surgeon with them during WWI, never knew much about them until reading so much studying CW materials. None of these did I really appreciate until reading more about the city during the war- you get a whole new perspective to the point of not feeling you ever, ever were there before. In point of fact I've been there many times, wish I'd not watsed those trips.

Thanks for having a thread of period photos, Jess! It's not truly 'war', so I wwouldn't think it approriate to put this kind of thing in a seperate thread, you know? I just love pics of 'life then'- some do not neccesarily pertain to the CW. This might be a well-known phot, but I'd never come across it before.
