Accurate Trouser Buttons?

Some of the paper-backed tin buttons on my federal trousers have popped off, which I imagine would have been quite common given their thin construction.

For sturdier replacements, would bone or wooden buttons be historically accurate?

Western theatre US it's what the man had in his housewife and pretty much anything went. For AoP, garrison, rear echelon etc. Sutler in camp would sell paper backed tin as they were cheap.

I replaced the buttons on my Federal trousers with bone buttons, nothing more annoying than constant button pop offs. I'm quite sure that the guys in the field at the time dealt with the same problem. All my CS trousers came with bone or wood buttons, no problems there.

"Jappaned" tin is also a good option. They're less crude and better finished, so don't tend to have the popping off problem as much.

Evidently where replacement suspender buttons not handy, just adapted a belt to the purpose...
