For anyone considering a personal subscription to Academia.edu, please be aware that the price has increased to $249 per year.
This is a very large increase in the already expensive annual subscription rate.

Yikes. That's a lot. I feel as if there must be ways to get access through an institution.

Rather like JSTOR, this site carries scholarly articles that are deep and not to be found elsewhere. However, if you get yourself on their mailing list--and avoid the subscription tier--its possible to access a lot for free.
