Abolition

Was Lincoln being honest when he said he had no intention of getting rid of slavery where it existed, or was that a political statement?

Did he change his mind throughout the war?

How did he get from the Emancipation Proclamation as a war measure to the Ten Percent Plan?

Did he legitimately see the Emancipation Proclamation as a war measure, or was that a cover for him as an abolitionist?

Was he really fighting to save the Union only or was it after all a moral crusade?

My understanding is that it was the former, but I'd be interested in arguments to the contrary.

*ONLY MAKE ASSERTIONS THAT YOU SUPPORT WITH HIS STATEMENTS. I want real history, not PC romanticizing.

Thanks
