For over 80 years a soldier that participated in some of the most horrific battles of the Civil War including Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Atlanta laid in an unmarked grave in Cresecent, Iowa. Private Thomas Dorsett of Company H, 27th Indiana Infantry deserved better but his family did not have the means to provide a headstone for him when he "crossed over the river" to join his comrades in 1926.

With the determination of his descendants who filed the paperwork with the Veterans Administration and a few phone calls to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Private Thomas Dorsett receieved Formal Military Honors and a headstone for his Civil War service this past weekend.

Thank you for posting this.
When you see a moving picture like this, and the implications of the respect shown to this long gone soldier, I think that any complaints about overweight and grey-headed re-enactors show an ignorance and insensitivity of why these men are still on the field. I think we should, rather, thank then for their devotion to the memories of the war dead and for showing many the realities of war at the time.
I hope this does not offend anyone, as this was not my intent.

That is great. Our family dedicated a new marker for one of our relatives. He had a headstone but it did not mention his service. I know the family is proud of what they did.
