A Veteran Hiding in Plain Sight

This veteran was hiding in plain sight, and I nearly missed him when I glanced at this photo in the Ebay auction. The only ID given in the auction title was "1890s Waverly Iowa Identified Family Cabinet Photo." Fortunately I did notice the GAR membership medal on his vest, and even better I was able to identify him from the names of his eight children on the back of the photo. This is Abner W. Mitchell, who served in Company K, 22nd Wisconsin Infantry. He was wounded at Resaca, Georgia, and transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on April 1, 1865. He mustered out of service on July 28, 1865.
After the war Abner and his family moved to Iowa, and he was a member of GAR Post 182 in Plainfield.
