A technical Question about WORD

I used to create a WORD document about an Ancestor or a battle and insert photos and screen shots of documentation. Then I formatted the images and text by either using 2-column section or using the Text Box. So I have done this for Years and years.
Then last Spring I upgraded my Puter and re-loaded the newest WORD App. It is now an App and it asks me to Sign-in. That bothers me---I chatted with a Techie and asked questions about this. My main question was: Would my WORD work if I had to work "off-line"? I told them my main concern was that MS HeadQuarters were seeing everyone of my documents.
But that is not my question. Back to my photo formatting.

Here is a typical image of one of my WORD documents.
This is a Screen Capture of the Print Preview. It is just how I wanted it to look.

BUT -- Print it and the images go back to full size. The two lower inserted documents blow up to twice the size and half of it is not visible. Also the image in the Text Box also enlarges. This image was a small thumbnail of the entire document; it isn't a large 2 mB file.

I googled Help and it says to insert the image and grab the corners of the image and drag to resize it. An alternate is go to Picture Tools menu / Format. Then enter the size you want it to be. A third method, of course, is to click on the image and enter the size---same thing.
Why is my Print version look totally different than my Preview version??

I've found the best way is to resize your final product using the "Paint" app, save or copy and paste to your pictures and choose that exact pic. and paste to the blank page on Word.
I've also resized/combined pics/documents on my scanner/printer, printed and rescanned it and saved it to my computer.

I have never liked to use Paint to re-size my photos. It distorts the pixels. In the old version of Windows there was a Photo Editor. It was removed from one of the upgrades but you could re-install it with some fancy footwork---loading an older version of windows and then removing it or something crazy. I googled and you can still do this but ---whew! ---I don't understand it.
Photo Editor was a great, simple editor. It was quick---just open and then select resize or edit colors. For every image on FOLD3 that I downloaded, I would re-size to a reasonable 55% and save with a Name to identify the soldier & unit and page No. I think in its earlier form it would even convert to a Negative image which was great for reading the fine details of old B&W images.
The current Windows Photos does not re-size that I can figure out. If you want to crop or edit the color, it takes about 3 clicks to even get to that command. And you can't really edit the Green Blue or Red as you could in Photo Editor. Now I have no way of editing the B&W images from FOLD3 to obtain the right contrast and exposure as I once could.

So you ask: How do I re-size now? I open Paint or Windows Photo and look at the preview image and make a screen capture of it. That is

Yes, I am looking for a good photo editor. I may as well get PhotoShop. I'm also looking for a lite Draft program where I can draw to scale. I'm also looking for a high school techie who wants to help set-up some of my programs and apps.

You might want to try some of the photo "Correction" functions in Word, @DixieRifles. The tools may not be as robust as they were in Photo Editor, but you can easily adjust the contrast and exposure using either pre-set degrees of light and dark, or by subtle gradations that you can adjust one percentage point at a time. Here's how to get to that command in Office 2010 (the path might be slightly different in later versions of Word):
1) After pasting your image into Word, double-click it to activate the controls in the "Format" tab.
2) Select "Corrections."
3) A pop-up window showing pre-set adjustments for the image will display. Click one to apply it to your image. (You may want to
try several.)
4) If you prefer to make more subtle adjustments in brightness and contrast, click the "Picture correction options" link at the bottom of the pop-up window. That will open another pop-up where you can adjust everything by degrees.

Another alternative you might want to consider is downloading the open-source GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). I've used only some of its most basic functions, but it appears to have a wealth of capabilities that I gather would be useful to skilled photo editors. Maybe some of the members here are more familiar with it and can offer suggestions.

I don't play with photos very much, but I have found that Irfan, which is free, has always done what I needed and appears to have many of the functions you have mentioned.

Hmmm..I've always just matched the pixel sizes (Hor & Ver) in percentage and it works fine for me.

Was there a reason you moved to the new version of Word ? I'm on Windows 10 because that's what my newest desktop came with but I still use the 2003 versions of Microsoft Office.
