Princeton University, then known as the College of New Jersey, had a substantial number of southern students before the war, as did other Ivy League schools - particularly Harvard, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania. In fact, at the battle of Gettysburg, thus far I have identified 12 Princeton alumni (graduates and non-graduates) in the southern army, but only 9 in the northern army. Of the former number, two were privates. But evidently the Yankees didn't consider the possibility that a few good skaters could be found down South.
