Look at the 2 "hash marks" or stripes on his sleeves above the cuffs - those are veteran's stripes awarded in the Regular Army ( only ) to denote having spent a specified amount of time in the Regular U. S. Army. The Iron Brigade was an entirely volunteer body made up of Western Federals. They were essentially new recruits and had no veterans among them. This enlisted man is therefore a career soldier and not a Civil War volunteer.
