Thought I post definitions of "a la" and "a la mode". These definitions are from Glossary A, Recipe Goldmine at:

http://recipegoldmine.com/glossary/glossary.html

" a la French meaning in the manner or style of."

"a la mode French served with or in fashion of.
Desserts served a la mode are served with ice cream; meats served a la mode are braised with vegetables and served with gravy."

This site, Recipe Goldmine, also has many other definitions used in cooking and some great recipes.

In French, in which I'm fairly fluent, a la means "to the," but la is used only before a feminine noun (such as mode). If used before a masculine noun, the article "the" is le. In French, a and le are combined to make au (pronounced "oh"). For example, returning to food, beef au jus.
