A challenge debate thread part 2

I agree, but upon pondering "strategic" I am not sure. Seems a lot of luck in the form of human weakness such as petty agitation between Johnston and Pemberton stalled what "could have been" disastrous. I think the stakes were longest in the western theater. But I'm only a cadet, a newbie, totally open-minded

Ok
Which side do I get.

I thought you were going to be the moderator. But if you want to debate, it sounds like you can pick whatever side you want and Scotsman will be willing to take the other. But then another moderator will have to be found.

Last I remember there was not 2 sides, but if we got two sides I will moderate.

Scotsman is willing to take the Gettysburg side. I'm willing to take the Vicksburg side. So if you're good with that and the revision to the topic, we're a go.

First line of defense is not approving any moderated posts except participants. It is in moderated threads.
Second line is out and out deletion with immediate reply ban.

Just got this!!!! Great!!! I think the topic is great for starters and I love the debating participants!!! Good luck and let's all have fun!!!!!!

There is nothing to prevent a kibitzer thread in Civil War History General Discussion about the debate where kibitzers can comment about the debate.

Wikipedia
A kibitzer is a non-participant person, offering (often unwanted) advice or commentary. This This Yiddish term is used in Contract bridge, chess, Go, and many other games. Kibitz is also a term referring to circular commenting. One person comments, then the other person comments. A back-and-forth conversation outside the main issue, where the people having the conversation are not directly participating.

Just let 'er go and fix it the next time around. Perfection isn't often achieved, especially on the first time it's tried. Get off the dime and do it. I promise to not interfere until given the go ahead.

The debate has started.

The Union victory at Vicksburg was of more importance to the outcome of the war than the victory at Gettysburg.

Due to thread name length Gettysburg got cut off the name.

I do have one suggestion though. How about changing the name of the thread? I don't think it's necessary to try to get the whole debate proposition into the thread name, especially since it lobs off one of the most important words. The proposition is clearly stated in the OP. So maybe a thread name like "Formal Debate: Vicksburg vs. Gettysburg" might make more sense and draw more interest?

It might also establish a precedent going forward (since I think most people here are really looking forward to meatier debates in the future). Future debate propositions are likely to be much more wordy and lengthy than this one, and might make even less sense if truncated in the thread title.

But look what you started! With your very first post, no less.
