A challenge debate thread part 2

I do have one suggestion though. How about changing the name of the thread? I don't think it's necessary to try to get the whole debate proposition into the thread name, especially since it lobs off one of the most important words. The proposition is clearly stated in the OP. So maybe a thread name like "Formal Debate: Vicksburg vs. Gettysburg" might make more sense and draw more interest?

It might also establish a precedent going forward (since I think most people here are really looking forward to meatier debates in the future). Future debate propositions are likely to be much more wordy and lengthy than this one, and might make even less sense if truncated in the thread title.

Thread renamed. now
Formal Debate: Vicksburg vs. Gettysburg which affected outcome of war more.

May make participants decide on thread name next time.

Just let 'er go and fix it the next time around. Perfection isn't often achieved, especially on the first time it's tried. Get off the dime and do it. I promise to not interfere until given the go ahead.

Going to be a bit of on the job training and ad hoc fixing.

We have a thread to comment on the debate so members can discuss without interfering with the debate.

Getting a bit anal, are we? Just get it on and do it.

We can fix it if it's not perfect the first time. And we might expect that it won't be, but these endless if's and but's become tiresome. A really good idea wading into a morass of indecision.

I spent 45 years as an analyst. Please note the first four letters of my decades long profession.

And I've spent 55 years as a get 'er done activist. Sometimes the magic works. Sometimes it doesn't. Analizing it is not part of getting it done. Perfect is not part of the process. Do it. Fix it. And do it again.

That why you have both on board. The pusher to make sure it gets done and the analyst keeping them from getting in the muck.

Tell you a story.

There is a Confederate Heritage group flagging a monument near me. Linn Park Confederate monument. I asked the group organizer if they had a permit for the protest and after a bunch of jumping up and down plus rhetoric they announced they had the permit but needed a bunch of money to pay for it and by the way they had not funded the speakers/entertainers yet. I've mention the need for medical personal in 98 degree Alabama heat and at some point when I feel it is safe ask if they have insurance to protect the organizers.

They are full of fire and gumption headed for the cliff.

The moral of the story is you need both.

I agree that we need to remain flexible. I don't think any one of us wants to get locked into a rigid format that we can't get out of. Adjust as we go. This first debate is a trial balloon. Tweaking may be necessary, and that's just fine if it will lead to better results down the road.

Ok. Now what? I propose stating the argument, which is easy: Grants Vicksburg campaign THE watershed...the true turning point of the Civil war, resulting in the most effective longstanding results signifying the beginning of the ultimate, and glorious end of the war.

Are you seriously suggesting that an experimental thread is headed for disaster?
