Answer: William Laurence Saunders, lawyer, soldier, editor, state official, and amateur historian. By July 1861 he was a second lieutenant in the Tenth Regiment, and by 1864 he was a colonel commanding the Forty-sixth Regiment, North Carolina Troops. He was wounded three times at the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 and two years later suffered a near-fatal wound at the Battle of the Wilderness when a ball entered his mouth, exited through the back of his throat, and permanently impaired his ability to speak clearly.

This is a pure guess, but there appears to be a resemblance to me: Future Union general John Pope.

Bonus: Confederate Naval Academy, which was located aboard CSS Patrick Henry (ex-Yorktown). The vessel served as both a school ship and as a part of the defenses of greater Richmond, and was generally moored near Drewry's Bluff (which was also where most of the midshipmen/students were housed).
