Claron A. Windus was a Deputy Sheriff in Kinney County, Texas who shot and killed fellow Medal of Honor recipient Adam Payne (aka Adam Paine), a Black Seminole, during an attempt to arrest Payne and two other men on fugitive warrants. Windus shot Payne with a "double barreled shotgun at such close range that Payne's clothing caught on fire. Payne was killed instantly..."
The killing of Payne by Windus is the only known incident of a MOH recipient killing another MOH recipient.

Claron A Windus

On New Years Day 1877, Windus became the only medal of honor recipient to shoot and kill another medal of honor recipient. Windus was a deputy sheriff of Brackettville, Texas. Adam Paine, a Black Seminole who had won the medal of honor in 1875, was in 1877 a fugitive of the law, hanging out with a known cattle thief. He was suspected of the stabbing murder of a soldier in Brownsville, Texas. On New Years Day 1877, Paine was in Brackettville with ex-army scouts to celebrate the new year when Windus decided to use the opportunity to arrest him for murder.
Windus with a small posse arrived at the New Years' celebration to arrest Paine. Windus spotted Paine, approached him, shoved a shotgun against his belly and pulled the trigger, killing him and setting his clothing on fire with the discharge. Windus then shot the cattle thief with a pistol while two other men, one of whom was also a medal of honor winner, fled the scene.

In 1898, Windus became a volunteer commissioned officer and served as a captain in Company I of the 9th U.S. Infantry Regiment during the Spanish–American War.


Claron A. Windus died at age 77 and was buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Brackettville, Texas.

Which Army of the Tennessee? Union or Confederate?

Edit - Actually, there were two armies with similar names. There was an "Army of the Tennessee," which was a Union army, and there was an "Army of Tennessee" (no "the"), which was a Confederate army.

The question was based on the Confederate "Army of Tennessee," so there was no ambiguity.
