During the Civil War Claron A. Windus (1850-1927) was a drummer boy with the Fifth Wisconsin Infantry. In 1870 he received the Medal of Honor "for gallantry in action" at Wichita River, TX. On New Years Day 1877 he became the only Medal of Honor recipient to do what?

Bonus. I am going with The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

Edit - It is clear that the author of the question believed the Army of Tennessee won only one battle that should be considered "major."

While it is true that the Army of Tennessee is considered to have won a tactical victory at Kennesaw Mountain, I have to figure that Chickamauga, rather than Kennesaw Mountain, was the "major" battle the questioner had in mind.

Question
On January 1, 1877, Claron A. Windus Medal of Honor recipient (a deputy sheriff of Brackettville Texas) and Medal of Honor recipient Adam Paine, a fugitive, met each other and Paine was shot and killed by Windus. It is the only time a Medal of Honor recipient killed another Medal of Honor recipient. Ironically there was another Medal of Honor recipient named Isaac Payne in the group with Paine, but he got on his horse a fled to Mexico and was later cleared of any wrong doing.

Main - In 1877, Windus shot and killed a fellow Medal of Honor recipient Adam Paine, a Black Seminole, whom Windus was attempting to arrest as a murder suspect.

Bonus - Chickamauga

In 1877, Windus shot and killed a fellow Medal of Honor recipient Adam Paine,[1] a Black Seminole, whom Windus was attempting to arrest as a murder suspect.[2][3] This is the only known instance of one Medal of Honor recipient killing another.[4] During the following 20 years, Windus was a customs inspector and deputy United States marshal.[2]

In 1898, Windus became a volunteer commissioned officer and served as a captain in Company I of the 9th U.S. Infantry Regiment during the Spanish–American War.[2]

Claron A. Windus died at age 77 and was buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Brackettville, Texas.[5]

Bonus

Bragg, intent on retaking Chattanooga and hoping to crush the Union army, welcomed this battle. At Chickamauga, Bragg received many reinforcements—including two divisions from Gen. Robert E. Lee's army under Gen. James Longstreet. On the battle's second day those troops exploited a gap in Rosecrans's lines, driving a large portion of his army from the field. At Chickamauga the Army of Tennessee won its only major victory of the war. Nonetheless, determined resistance by Union troops under Gen. George Thomas allowed the rest of the northern army to safely retreat back to Chattanooga.

Windus was mustered out of the army in 1871 and became a deputy sheriff at Brackettville, Texas.[2] In 1877, Windus shot and killed a fellow Medal of Honor recipient Adam Paine,[1] a Black Seminole, whom Windus was attempting to arrest as a murder suspect.[2][3] This is the only known instance of one Medal of Honor recipient killing another
