Citing Craig swains online blog"to the sound of the guns" iron frogs- model 1861 8" siege mortar.the fort Pitt mortars had the raised numbers on the top and to the side of barrell, and early Cyrus Alger had 3 ratchet elevating recesses.although the other two foundries may have produced a 3 ratchet varient too.

My 8-inch motar shell was brought up off the sea bed during dredging operations in Mobile Bay, Alabama in 1970. Part of the surface is rusted away but I think that gives it a bit of character. Years ago I used it to hold my spare pocket change, but once it was full of coins it was an absolute bear to roll it around to get it all out!

I'm pretty sure this is what I have. Discovered while on a walk on the beach. Just over 44 lbs and 7.8" diameter. Anyone know if these are rare to find?

It is, welcome to the group from middle Alabama and a few years ago during beach restoration off Gulf Shores, Alabama the dredge sucked up a cannon ball and to say that this caused some excitement on board would be an understatement. And while they are not particularly rare, to find one under your circumstances would be-congratulations.
