Then I hoisted by new star-spangled banner in New York until I died in 1864. Much later a ship was named after me, torpedoed a president and ultimately was sunk by some strange divine wind. Who am I?

Not sure of the main question, but the bonus appears to refer to William D. "Dirty Bill" Porter. (The destroyer William D. Porter launched a torpedo as part of a demonstration that then turned toward the battleship Iowa, which had President Franklin D. Roosevelt aboard, but fortunately the torpedo missed. The crew of the destroyer was in hot water for sure for that! And then later, she was sunk after getting hit by a kamikaze off Okinawa.)

Friday: Key West memorial to Confederate soldiers, put up by United Daughters of Confederacy in 1924 and, per this source, recently restored along with a nearby memorial to Union soldiers who were stationed there and died of disease and a memorial to Vietnam War soldiers. Part of the restoration includes a new memorial to USCT enlistees from that area. So there are memorials to everyone--I like this idea!

But the nation's southernmost city is restoring its memorials — to both sides of the Civil War.

That includes a white pavilion in Key West, which has stood in Bayview Park since the United Daughters of the Confederacy put it up in 1924. Many longtime residents, like Tom Theisen, never even noticed who had built it.

"I probably had seen it before, but it never crossed my mind until all the flag stuff," Theisen says.
