MO 7 CS executed May 1865

Joel Dennis was evidently among these prisoners, and it was said giving the Masonic sign of distress upon discovering what was to be their fate, the Union commander of their captors ordered him to be spared, and the balance were shot. He evidently led the locals to the bodies, which were collected and buried in the Cowan Cemetery.

the McGee family, family of one of the slain, claims that a slave named John, who was a servant to the men, brought the news of their death home to them.

Exactly who killed them, or members of what unit, it unknown.
