Grace Bedell , from Westfield, New York, was eleven years old in October 1860 when she wrote to Abraham Lincoln urging him to grow a beard to improve his appearance. Lincoln replied to the letter making no promises but within a month he had grown a full beard.

Grace Bedell was a women originally from Westfield, New York most noted for writing a letter on October 15, 1860, when she was 11 years old, to then presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln, suggesting that he let his "whiskers grow" because his "face was so thin" and by doing so, her brothers and father would vote for him.

I know this one as well. She was the young girl who wrote a letter to Abraham Lincoln encouraging him to grow his beard.

We have a summer place on Chautauqua Lake in Western NY. There is a memorial showing Grace meeting Abe at the corner of Route 20 and Route 394 in Westfield NY (about 12 miles from our place). I drive past it probably 30 times per year. Westfield is in the middle of wine country. Many wineries in the area. Plus there are miles and miles of Concord grape vines supplying Welch's juice and jelly production. One of the joys of fall is driving in the area with the windows down smelling the sweet ripening grapes.
