Two generals - one in blue, the other in gray. Both West Point graduates although 16 years apart and definitely not nearly as equal in class ranking. At the beginning of the war one would be a Colonel - the other a Captain. As the war continued they would both attain the rank of Major General. What do they have in common? A date with destiny during July, 1864 - fighting the same battle (in a fight to control what would become the state’s 5th capital location in 1868) they would be killed on the same day. Who are these two men?

Bonus: Question: What is a Squibb Pannier??

Edit - Note that the main question is a two-parter, asking "What do they have in common?" and "Who are these two men?"

Players are cautioned not to forget to answer the first part. I anticipate that there will be a wide variety of acceptable answers to the first part, but if you don't give an answer to that part, you will not get credit for a correct response.

A compact medical chest. Edward Robinson Squibb (1819-1900) was a Navy doctor who saw the need to improve the quality of medicines available on ships during the Mexican War. In 1858 he founded his own pharmaceutical laboratory to produce uniform, high-quality medicines. /p> Squibb made these medicines available to the Union Army during the Civil War with the invention of the Squibb pannier which was filled with some 50 medicines to enable doctors to treat casualties on the battlefield. It sold for about $100, and included ether, chloroform, quinine, whiskey, and herbal treatments for dysentery. The chest included a chart glued to the inside lid which showed where each of the numbered medicines was located in the box.

Yeah, it’s the same Squibb as today’s Bristol-Myers-Squibb, just in case you wondered.

Battle of Atlanta, July 22, 1864. They both died the same day.

A Squibb Pannier is a fully stocked wooden medicine chest. The box was filled with some 50 medicines to treat casualties. The chest sold for about $100, and included ether and chloroform for use as an anesthetic during amputations, quinine and whiskey to treat symptoms of malaria, and herbal treatments for dysentery and other diseases that ravaged the unsanitary military camps.

Main question: W.H.T. Walker and James B. McPherson

Bonus: a squibb pannier is a big box or basket for hauling carried by pack animals.

Edit - For the bonus question, you needed to say something about the fact that the big box contained medical supplies.

They should be James Birdseye McPherson and William Henry Talbot Walker .

Thanks, two cool questions.

The two major generals were Union Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson and Confederate Major General William H. T. Walker. The 5th capital of Georgia was Atlanta, and the Battle of Atlanta, during which the above two were killed, was July 22, 1864.

Bonus: a medical chest with a particular organization of standard supplies and medicines, created by E. R. Squibb of New York. The chest was divided into two tiers. Bandages, surgical instruments, and other supplies, including horsehair to pack wounds, were stored in the removable upper tier, while the lower tier was divided into compartments to accommodate 52 standard medicines. To make locating a medicine in the pannier easier, each drug container was given a number that corresponded to a numbered compartment in the lower level. A diagram showing the location of each numbered container was glued to the inside of the lid for quick reference.
