4th of july bonus:

that got to wait

Main question: They were called Quaker guns. The two Confederate generals were Joseph Johnston and P. G. T. Beauregard. The Union colonel was E. R. S. Canby.

Bonus: Sometimes I try a few searches and feel like I'm getting closer, but I'm not getting that feeling this time.

On the bonus, I am learning that if you hit a road block - take a day away from the question and come back to it. After spending a few hours on this yesterday, I gave up and came back today - and found it in 10 minutes.

My name is Edward Ludlow Hines, father of Duncan Hines

Regular Question:
1. Quaker Guns
2.
a.) Confederate General Joseph E Johnston in Mar 1862 at Centreville, VA wiki/Quaker_gun#Use_during_the_American_Civil_War
b.) Confederate General PGT Beauregard in May 1862 at Corinth, MS historynet.com/hoodwinked-during-americas-civl-war-confederate-military-deception.htm
c.) Union Colonel Edward Canby in Feb 1862 in the "West" at Fort Craig (then AZ; now New Mexico) www.thoughtco.com/battle-of-valverde-2360950

BONUS:
Interesting question. Unfortunately, I have no idea who this might be. Looking forward to the answer!

  1. Quaker Guns
  2. CSA General Joseph Johnston used them in Centerville, VA, against General McClellan (March, 1862)
  3. CSA General P.G.T. Beauregard used them in Corinth, MS, against General Halleck et al, to successfully save his army in retreat (May, 1862).
  4. USA Colonel Edward Canby at Fort Craig, February, 1862 - according to Wikipedia: "On Fort Craig's massive gravel bastions were mounted "Quaker guns" . . . . . . this impressive ruse squelched (CSA General Henry) Sable's plans for a direct assault on Fort Craig. Furthermore, Sibley did not have the heavy artillery necessary for a siege against the heavily fortified and defended fort". Colonel Canby would be promoted to Brigadier General in March of 1862 after the Union victory at Glorieta Pass.

Edit - My compliments to those who got the correct answer to the bonus question. That was a tough one.

It is appreciated when players who submit questions include links to sources that support their official answer. In this case, I note that one of the sources given is a 34-minute video.

I guess it's OK for a question submitter to submit a link to such a video for the benefit of anybody who wants to watch it. I would say, however, that if any player answering a question submits a link to such a video in support of their response, it's highly questionable that I will spend the amount of time necessary to see if the video really does contain verification that the answer is correct.
