On May 16, 1861, this legislation was passed by the Confederate Congress, which stated in part:
"That the five general officers provided by existing laws for the Confederate States shall have the rank and denomination of 'general', instead of 'brigadier-general', which shall be the highest military grade known to the Confederate States..."

Who were these five full generals?

Wild guesses ...
P.G.T. Beauregard
Albert S. Johnston
Joseph E. Johnston
Robert E. Lee
and maybe B. Bragg

Good one!

Edit - Bragg eventually became a full general upon the death of Albert Sidney Johnston, but he was not one of the original five.

Would they be: PGT Beauregard, Joseph Johnson, R E Lee, Braxton Bragg and John Magruder??

Edit - Bragg, as noted in an edit to an earlier post, eventually became a full general but was not one of the original five.

The highest rank attained by Magruder was major general.

Welcome to the trivia game. Hope you'll come back and play again.

Samuel Cooper, Albert Sidney Johnston, Robert E. Lee, Joseph E. Johnston, P.G.T. Beauregard. Listed in order of rank, which caused some ructions, particularly on the part of Joe Johnston. (not posted as link to avoid posting the very long article!).

And my attempt to avoid posting the whole article didn't work, sorry!

Edit - I've experienced the same problem when trying to post a link to a Wikipedia article. Don't know why it happens.
