  • Special Notes: Cast at the Fort Pitt Foundry in 1862 by Mr. Charles Knapp, the Dictator was used for a short time in the summer and fall of 1864 during the siege operations in front of Petersburg, VA.
The men of Company G of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery, served the Dictator. A curve in the tracks allowed the Dictator's gunners to stay mobile and adjust the plane of fire.

"The Dictator" was served by Company G of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment built at Fort Pitt Foundry by Captain John Ericsson

Edit - The source you cited indicates that John Ericsson was, indeed, involved in the construction of something called the "Dictator," but Ericsson's Dictator was a vessel, not the big gun described in the question.

Edit - Correct, Sultana65. Welcome to CivilWarTalk and to the trivia game.

If you haven't done so already, you're invited to stop by the New Recruits Meet & Greet forum and introduce yourself to some more CivilWarTalkers.

You joined the game just as it's going on hiatus for the rest of July. Hope you'll come back and play again when the game resumes in August.
