I wish I had that awesome jacket, I'm just taking a guess but would that be a smoking jacket he's wearing? If those are his military trousers the stripe width will tell you what rank he holds.

This is a man who put a lot of thought into his wardrobe! The bow tie looks like it is a starched tatted lace like my grandmother used to make. The pants look like they have more than one stripe on each leg. The perfection of the mustache is also impressive.

There is nothing about this ambrotype to provide any insight into which unit or side he fought on.

He looks a bit like Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. That's quite a jacket!

With that outfit, this gentleman would have been right at home on Carnaby Street in London in the mid 1960s! Apparently he was also at home in the 1860s too.

A riverboat gambler? If I were costume designer for a 1950s western that called for that role, this guy would be perfect!

Edit: He also looks capable of tying the innocent maiden to the railroad tracks to force her to his will
