Edit - lelliott19 has alerted me to a potential source of confusion which players may encounter in attempting to answer the bonus question.

Here is the explanation she sent me.

"The original webpage source I used for the question has been modified since I sourced the question, and another man is now listed who served as a Col and was later promoted to Bvt Maj Gen at the end of the CW. It will probably be confusing for people now. Unless they look up each man to see when his appointment was made, there are now 22 General Officers in the list provided in the original source."

lelliott19 is very sorry for the confusion, though it really isn't her fault.

So, my advice to players is that if you find a source that names a regiment from which there were 22, rather than 21, members who went on to serve as General officers in the Civil War, about half of whom served on the Union side and half on the Confederate - you probably have the right one.

That would be the class of May 1861. According to this source the first one to be wounded was Henry W. Kingsbury, mortally wounded at Antietam, September 1862

"Kilpatrick graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1861, just after the start of the war, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Artillery. Within three days he was a captain in the 5th New York Infantry ("Duryée's Zouaves").
Kilpatrick was the first United States Army officer to be wounded in the Civil War, struck in the thigh by canister fire while leading a company at the Battle of Big Bethel, June 10, 1861."

On the bonus I had always thought the 2nd US Cavalry "the regiment the stars fell on" led the pack with 16 - so guess I am on the hunt for the correct answer.

I'm going to guess it was Adelbert Ames, graduated May 1861, wounded at Bull Run July 21 1861. Earned a Medal of Honor and died at 97 years of age in 1933.
