Trivia 6-6-16 Paymaster

RICHARD TAYLOR ALLISON was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky on June 6, 1823. The son of Captain John S. Allison USA and the nephew of President Zachary Taylor, he was appointed Purser in the U.S. Navy on October 30, 1849. Allison served onboard the USS Benicia and the USS Princeton until he was transfered to service onboard the USS Macedonia, were he accompanied Commodore Matthew C. Perry's expedition to Japan in 1852. On May 7, 1859, Allison was appointed Paymaster at the Washington Navy Yard.
At the outbreak of the Civil War with him being a native Kentuckian, he tendered his resignation from the U.S.Navy on April 20, 1861, but remained on duty until May 1st at the request of Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. Allison then left for Richmond, VA where he telegraphed CSA President Jefferson Davis at Montgomery, Alabama offering his services to the Confederacy. Summond to Montgomery, he accepted an appointment as Major and Paymaster of the Confederate States Marine Corps, moving to Richmond and remaining there on station until the evacuation in 1865

A nephew of Pres. Zachary Taylor (so also a cousin of Gen. Richard Taylor) he had been a purser/paymaster in the Union Navy before, had accompanied Perry to Japan and was serving at the Washington Navy Yard when the war began. Sounds like a rather reasonable choice (unlike so many others).

Maj Richard Taylor Allison (Jun. 6, 1823 - Apr. 10, 1909) born Jefferson County, Kentucky, 1823; moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1845; appointed paymaster, United States Navy, October 30, 1849; serving at the Washington Navy Yard, at the outbreak of the Civil War; resided with his wife, Maria, at Washington, D.C., 1860; name stricken from the rolls of the United States Navy, May 6, 1861; appointed paymaster in the Confederate States Marine Corps, May 10, 1861, with rank of major; served at Richmond, Virginia, 1864; attached to Semmes Naval Brigade, April, 1865; surrendered and paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, April 26, 1865; after the war he resided in Baltimore, where he was employed as clerk of the Supreme Court.

On March 16, 1861 the provisional Confederate government authorized a Confederate States Marine Corps. It's leadership for a great majority of the war consisted of the following:

  • Commandant - Colonel Lloyd J. Beall
  • Asst Commandant - Lt. Col Henry B. Tyler
  • Quartermaster - Maj Algernon S. Taylor
  • Paymaster - Maj. Richard T. Allison
  • Adjutant - Maj. Israel Greene
  • Sergeant Major of C.S.M.C. - SgtMaj Edwin Wallace
