The Battle of Sailor's Creek (also known in whole or in part as Sayler's Creek, Little Sailor's Creek, Harper's Farm,Marshall's Cross Roads, Hillsman Farm, Double Bridges, or Lockett's Farm) was fought on April 6, 1865.

Trick question

Technically, there were 2 battles fought that day (4/6/1865) both part of the Appomattox Campaign and both around Farmville, VA:

- The Battle of Sailor's (Sayler's) Creek was the major engagement (and probably what you are look for as an answer here.) About 16000 Union Troops under Phillip Sheridan vs about 18000 Confederate Troops under Richard Ewell & John Gordon. That was a major rout for the Union, that devastated the Confederate forces with close to 8000 casuatlies and multiple officers captured, including Ewell.
- Less than 10 miles Northeast of there, there was the Battle of High Bridge where about 900 Union Troops under Col. Theodore Reed (KIA in that battle) fought about 1200 Confederate Troops under Maj. Gen. Thomas (Tex) Rosser. It was a major rout for the Confederates, with every single Union soldier either killed or captured.

Both of those battles were technically 2-day battles...

Edit - You are correct that the Battle of High Bridge also took place on April 6. so both answers are correct.

Battles of Saylor's Creek and Rice's Station. Both were Union victories.

Edit - The Battle of Rice's Station also took place on April 6, so both of these answers are correct.

The Battle of Sailors (Saylers) Creek.

Also the start of the Battle of High Bridge, which was a 2 day engagement so I guess you are looking for Sailors Creek.

Lee signed the document April 9 so that would be April 6th. The largest battle on that day was Sayler's Creek, Va. (Ewell). There are several other names and variant spellings of Sayler's for this series of rolling engagement culminating at the creek, but Sayler's is now the preferred "official" spelling (ahem, ahem). Maps from the time use "Sailor's", so who knows what the official name will be in years to come?

Smaller engagements during the withdrawal from Richmond took place on the same day at Rice's Station (Longstreet) and High Bridge (Longstreet's rearguard under Rosser).
