Ivan Vasilevich Turchaninoff, a veteran of the Crimean War, changed his name to to Basil Turchin on arrival to America, joined the Union Army and was promoted to Colonel.
Turchin's troops committed "some unsolderly things" when they recaptured Athens, Alabama and sacked it. He was condemned by his comrades, however he was "praised for his Russian methods" by many, and promoted to Brigadier General by Lincoln.
