"Colonel Rosser, commanding the 1st Regiment and Fourth Battalion, with Captain Bledsoe's artillery, being stationed on the extreme left, was attacked by Colonel Sigel's battery, and his men exposed to a deadly fire for thirty minutes."

Graves survived the war, returned to his state of birth, Kentucky, and spent most of the rest of his life teaching at Lexington High School (Dudley School today)

Colonel John R. Graves.
Which unit was the writer commanding (after his immediate predecessor was killed in action in that battle)?
First Brigade, Second Division, Missouri State Guard.
 
Wilson's Creek, August 10, 1861. The report was written by Franz Sigel, at the time a Colonel. During the battle he was in command of the 2nd Brigade of General Lyon's Army of the West which consisted of the 3d and 5th Missouri Infantry, Co I 1st US Cavalry, Co. C 2nd US Dragoons and a Battery of the Missouri Light Artillery. After Lyon's death Sigel was given command of The Army of the West.
