A General was badly wounded in an 1862 battle and had to have his right arm amputated. He was visited by a another general who had lost his left arm some years back. That general jokingly said that now they "could buy their gloves together" and they shook their good hands.

Name the two generals.

Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909) and Philip Kearny, Jr. (1815-1862).
On June 1, 1862, Howard lost his right arm in the Battle of Fair Oaks. He was visited by Kearny, who had lost his left arm in the Battle of Churubusco August 20, 1847. Howard joked, "I want to make a bargain with you, General, that hereafter we buy our gloves together".
