Anyone see a buckle like this. The best description of the symbol is a compass rose but hard to identify?

What does the back of the object look like?

Appears most likely to be the medallion off of a key chain fob. These were common in the 1970-80 era and beyond bearing various advertising, corporate, fraternal, occupational, sports, automotive logo's or generic symbols on them. The medallion usually affixed to a leather fob that also had the split ring for keys attached also...

Here is one similar key fob, one but it has the Chrysler logo on it instead.

Well, it could be a key chain fob, but it looks older to me. It doesn't look anything like any civil war object I have seen, but it doesn't look like the Chrysler logo, either. This is something more historic.

It just struck me that this could be part of a pocket watch fob. It would serve the same basic function as a modern key fob, but would hang as a decoration outside the vest pocket.

It is NOT a Chrysler emblem, not even close. I found two of the exact same item detecting at an 1873-1876 settlement site in Nebraska. There was a small store there and I'm guessing they are watch fobs from the late 1860s or early 1870s.
