Allegheny Arsenal on Sept. 17,1862 in Pittsburgh. Pa.

Magnolia Cadets Flag Alabama. Selma's Magnolia cadets began the war with more than 1400 men that marched under a silk banner made by two Dallas County sisters, Elo-die Todd and Martha Todd White, the half-sisters of Mary Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's wife. The cadets were assigned to the 4th Alabama.

The Confederate Ammunition factory, Browns Island, on the James River outside Richmond, Virginia.

Edit - The question asked about an explosion that took place on the same day as the Battle of Antietam, i.e., Sept. 17, 1862. The explosion at Brown's Island was a similarly horrific event, but it took place about six months later, on March 13, 1863.

Main question: The explosion took place in Lawrenceville, PA, which is now part of the city of Pittsburgh. I will accept either Lawrenceville or Pittsburgh as a correct answer.

First Bonus: I'm having no luck with this one so far. I thought it would be a matter of finding someone who became a brigadier general in July 1863 and was killed in July, August, or September of the same year, but the fact that his promotion to general wasn't confirmed makes it more difficult.

Easter Bonus: The Magnolia Cadets were part of the 4th Alabama Infantry. The group which sewed the flag included Martha Todd White and Elodie Todd Dawson, both of whom were half-sisters of Mary Todd Lincoln.

The explosion occurred at the U.S. Allegheny Arsenal in Lawrenceville. Ultimately, 78 people perished in Pittsburgh's deadliest industrial accident and the Civil War's worst civilian disaster.
