Osterhaus yelled to the rebels "if you stay there I will give you hell smell". They did and Osterhaus fired a 12 pounder and hit a rebel gun. He said I told you I would give you hell smell. His men gave him the nickname "old hell smell" which was remembered by his men 50 years later.

Bonus: Well, I suspect that there are a great many grandsons who reached high levels in government service and were better known than their grandfathers. I'm unable to figure out the identity of the somewhat obscure Hoosier-born Civil War major/colonel/lawyer who was their grandfather. So, I have no answer to the bonus question.
