The Great Train Chase
(a song parody to the tune: "The Wabash Cannonball")

Going south to Georgia, planning our attack,
on a train just sitting here, waiting on the track.
The Rebs were eating breakfast no one was around,
"Come on, boys. It's time to go", to Tennessee we're bound.

The Yanks are going faster, destroying as they go.
The Rebels they are running, although it's going slow.
The telegraph not working, but soon they catch a break,
a hand car sitting by the tracks, the Rebs now giving chase.

Chorus
Listen to the Yankees, listen to them roar,
As they climb the hillsides, fighting for their cause,
but soon the raiders sober up, for they are in a bind,
now the Rebs have found a train, they're racing from behind.

* * * * * * * * * *

The chase is getting faster, the Rebs are closing in,
now their train is catching up, things are looking grim.
The Yanks are getting desperate, my how life is cruel,
the raiders off and running as their train ran out of fuel.

All the Yankees rounded up, and now to face their fates,
some are killed, some in jail; some manage to escape.
The story of their daring becoming quite a tale,
the legend of a "General" riding on the rails.

Chorus
Listen to the Rebels, listen to them roar,
as they travel on the rails to even up the score.
Fuller was determined, to get back his train
and teach the Yanks a lesson so they won't try it again.

  1. William Fuller was quoted that he ran "this far" before he reached the handcar?
  2. There were many Andrews Raiders that were recipients of the Medal of Honor, however, there were 2 that went on to be recaptured by the Confederate Army during a famous Georgia battle. Name the 2 and the battle.

Fuller (Cain & Murphy) ran two miles to Moon's Station where they found the hand cart.

Mark Wood and Elihu H Mason both were captured at Chickamauga.

1. "Fuller, meanwhile, was setting some kind of track record. 'I ran two and a half miles, and when I say run, I don't mean trot, gallop or pace. I mean run,' he later recalled. When he reached the repair crew and heard its story, he began to doubt the deserter theory. The thieves, whoever they were, seemed to have no trouble operating the stolen train. Fuller took the repair crew's pole car-a small handcar pushed along by poles, much as a keelboat was propelled upstream by poling-and went back to collect the panting Murphy and Cain."

2. Elihu H. Mason and Mark Wood during the Battle of Chickamauga.
Sources - Elihu H. Mason
2nd Lieutenant Mark Wood (USA)

1. 2 miles per these sources:
https://www.sofmag.com/andrews-raid...al-of-honor-recipient-army-pvt-jacob-parrott/
https://www.cem.va.gov/CEM/pdf/Medal_of_Honor_Narratives_Andrews_Raiders.pdf

2. Elihu H. Mason and Mark Wood; Chickamauga.
Wikipedia articles, "Great Locomotive Chase" (had to look up each survivor). "Elihu H. Mason," "Mark Wood (Medal of Honor)"

I had to read at least twenty (I lost count) online articles to find this info. Only the above two (in #1) gave the distance run. I couldn't find anything other than these wikipedia articles (in #2) that followed the raiders after they received the MOH. At least I found out more about the Great Locomotive Chase!

1. moon's station - source
2. elihu harlam mason - mark wood - battle of Chickamauga

Edit - Although the intent of the question was to ask for the distance in miles, that wasn't stated specifically, and Fuller did run to Moon's Station. Therefore, I will consider this to be an acceptable response.

Oops, Can't delete anymore! My new first answer is from this website
https://www.hbgdiocese.org/great-locomotive-chase-andrews-raid/

The General's able and staunch Confederate engineer, who flew out of the Fletcher Hotel with his napkin still tucked under his chin. He ran at nearly a full sprint for five-miles following his beloved, but stolen train. And when the bewildered railroad crew saw Fuller running up the tracks followed by two of his train staff, they were amazed at his tenacity and resolute firmness in tracking down the stolen train.

Answer to first part: Two miles.

Answers to second part: I found that Wilson Brown, Daniel Dorsey, and Elihu Mason all went on to be involved in the battle of Chickamauga, and that Mason was captured at that battle, but my source doesn't specify that either of the other two was captured there. So, I'll just have to guess.

Wilson Brown and Elihu Mason, Battle of Chickamauga

William Fuller was quoted that he ran 2 1/2 miles
Medal of Honor Winner: Elihu H. Mason & Mark Wood
Captured at: Chickamauga

3. Wikipedia - Elihu H. Mason & Mark Wood

Edit - Players submitted sources supporting 2, 2 1/2, and 5 miles as the distance that Fuller ran, so all these answers are acceptable.

A source was also submitted indicating that John Wollam, in addition to Mason and Wood, was captured at Chickamauga, so that answer is acceptable as well.

I was unable to find any sources to verify that any others of Andrews' Raiders were captured by the Confederates at any subsequent battle.
