The Great Train Chase
(a song parody to the tune: "The Wabash Cannonball")

Going south to Georgia, planning our attack,
on a train just sitting here, waiting on the track.
The Rebs were eating breakfast no one was around,
"Come on, boys. It's time to go", to Tennessee we're bound.

The Yanks are going faster, destroying as they go.
The Rebels they are running, although it's going slow.
The telegraph not working, but soon they catch a break,
a hand car sitting by the tracks, the Rebs now giving chase.

Chorus
Listen to the Yankees, listen to them roar,
As they climb the hillsides, fighting for their cause,
but soon the raiders sober up, for they are in a bind,
now the Rebs have found a train, they're racing from behind.

* * * * * * * * * *

The chase is getting faster, the Rebs are closing in,
now their train is catching up, things are looking grim.
The Yanks are getting desperate, my how life is cruel,
the raiders off and running as their train ran out of fuel.

All the Yankees rounded up, and now to face their fates,
some are killed, some in jail; some manage to escape.
The story of their daring becoming quite a tale,
the legend of a "General" riding on the rails.

Chorus
Listen to the Rebels, listen to them roar,
as they travel on the rails to even up the score.
Fuller was determined, to get back his train
and teach the Yanks a lesson so they won't try it again.

  1. William Fuller was quoted that he ran "this far" before he reached the handcar?
  2. There were many Andrews Raiders that were recipients of the Medal of Honor, however, there were 2 that went on to be recaptured by the Confederate Army during a famous Georgia battle. Name the 2 and the battle.

1) Fuller ran two and a half miles before he reached the work gang and the handcar

"I ran two and a half miles," remembered Fuller, "and when I say run, I don't mean trot, gallop or pace. I mean run." What the raiders did not know was that he had spent years on the railroad as a flagman, which in the early days of rail meant running ahead of a train to flag down any oncoming traffic. He had lost none of his vigor. "As I ran, I thought, and I thought as fast as I ran, and I ran as fast as I could."

2) Battle of Chickamauga - Elihu Harlam Mason and Mark Wood were recaptured.

Captain William A. Fuller didn't stop to consider the situation but on foot started up the track after the fleeing train. A mile away he secured a hand car and with Anthony Murphy

Jacob Wilson Parrott
(July 17, 1843–December 22, 1908

He served with the Union Army for the remainder of the war. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1863 after the Battle of Stones River and as a first lieutenant in 1864

Wilson Wright Brown (December 25, 1839 – December 25, 1916

He was promoted to Sergeant, November 1, 1862. He later saw action at the Battle of Stones River, December 31, 1862 - January 3, 1863, at Dug Gap, Georgia, September 11, 1863 and was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga. In 1863, Brown was awarded a Medal of Honor for his actions during the raid. He was discharged May 15, 1864.[1][3]

Edit - I couldn't find any sources indicating that either Parrott or Brown was captured by the Confederates at a subsequent battle. There are sources giving various distances for the length of Fuller's run, but I couldn't find any source that said it was as short as one mile.

Conductor Fuller, Superintendent Murphy, and Engineer Cain pursued the stolen General on foot, running from Big Shanty to Moon's Station (Both located in modern-day Kennesaw, Georgia), a distance of two miles, where they continued pursuit using a maintenance of way pole car.
John Wollam (1840–1890), Private, 33rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, escaped. He was captured in the Battle of Chickamauga. He was awarded the Medal of Honor July 20, 1864.
Elihu H. Mason (1831-1896), Sergeant, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was exchanged and afterward commissioned Captain. He also was captured in the Battle of Chickamauga. He was awarded the Medal of Honor March 25, 1863.

William Fuller was quoted as saying, "I ran two and a half miles, and when I say run, I don't mean trot, gallop or pace. I mean run."

This one is a guess.

Edit - I can't get your second link to work for me and I can't find any other source stating that Wilson was captured at Chickamauga.
