The 2nd Iowa Cavalry played a major role in the 2nd Battle of Collierville, 3 Nov 1863. Some of their companies were armed with 5-shot Colt revolver rifles.

At the Battle of Collierville, they were under command of Colonel Hatch.

"Gen George" was Colonel James Z. George, commander of the 5th Mississippi Cavalry---my ancestor's regiment. He was still called "General" because he had been Adjutant General of the Mississippi State Militia.
 
If you read Tim Smith's book, you will see that part of the success of Grierson's raid was the diversion created by the 2d Iowa Cavalry and the other regiment and the wounded when the split off from the main column and headed back towards LaGrange.
