29th Illinois------------8 companies were captured at Holly Springs during Van Dorn's raid. The other 2 companies were detached to Jackson, Tennesse. Every man at Holly Springs surrendered. The question is what flags did they have with them at Holly Springs.

Several engagements at Holly Springs. Is this the correct one ? Grant's Central Mississippi Campaign November 2 to December 20. Surrendered at Holly Springs, Miss., December 20, 1862. Paroled and sent to Benton Barracks, Mo. Duty there till July, 1863 (Cos. "D" and "K" escaped capture,

HOLLY SPRINGS, MISS
DEC. 20TH, 1862

Holly Springs, Miss., Dec. 20, 1862. Detachment of the
Army of the Tennessee. Early on the morning of Dec. 20, the
Confederates under Van Dorn surprised the town of Holly
Springs. Little resistance was made by the garrison under
Col. R. C. Murphy, of the 8th Wis. infantry, the larger
portion of the command being in bed when the town was
attacked. The enemy captured and paroled some 1,500 men and
destroyed $400,000 worth of property. Col. Murphy was later
dismissed from the service of his country for neglecting to
take the necessary precautions to guard the place.

My great great grandfathers were in the 29th Illinois Infantry George Patrick Phelps, Aaron Shelby McKenzie and Theodore Millspaul. I Believe McKenzie and Millspaul were officers.

My great great Grandfather Henry Shappard and brother William were privates in Co. K ofnthe 29th Illinois. Henry was in the hospital at Holly Springs when the Cos. D and K were detached. William went with the detached but Henry stayed and was captured and paroled being sent to Benton Barracks to await release in July 1863. Phil Shappard
