So far I have uncovered ,6 of my ancestors that we're in the 24th Virginia Infantry. My question is did each unit have buttons representing their units or we're they standard for all.
That's great you were able to find out about your ancestors. My grandfather always claimed we were related to General Sherman but I can't find the link. I wish I listened to more about our family history while he was still alive. I will be curious to see the answers to your question, I am not too familiar with the 24th Infantry but maybe @ucvrelics.com can help.

Buttons would be standard for all companies and would range from brass Virginia state seal, CSA and wooden buttons depending upon the time frame. They could also have the I button both local and imported.

VA buttons are plentyful as they along with NC SC & GA had more troops. I would suggest Albert's and Tice's books on button collecting and stay with the CS back-marks unless they have a pre-war back-mark, ie RMDC.
