Hi, I am looking for additional information for my GGrandfather that served in the NY 23rd from May 9th, 1861 to March 19, 1863. He was wounded in the right arm at Antietam. I have found (and purchased" a book that was written about the NY 23rd "Campfires of the Twenty-Third". I have one photo of my GGrandfather in front of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Rochester NY (I think the photo is from the GAR reunion of 1911). I have used this forum to find links to photos and have found 4 photos of NY 23rd and to look up his pension records.

I would like to go the the next level of research and wondering where to go from here. Thank You!! Jim

Jim Hanson--

First off, welcome aboard the CivilWarTalk forum from Hampton Roads Virginia. Glad to have you here.

It looks like you have a great start on learning about your ancestor. Have you obtained his compiled service record (CSR)? That's different from the pension records. The CSR has things such as the descriptive physical roll, the muster rolls, hospital and death records, etc. You can learn a lot from going through the files, such as whether your ancestor was on detached service, hospitalized for wounds or disease, etc.

You can obtain the CSR either from the Fold3 website (membership fee required unless you use their 7-day free trial  ) or you can order the record from the National Archives (costs $30). Info on how to order the CSR from the archives can be found here: https://eservices.archives.gov/orde...+Product+Form+Applet+FFO&SWEPostnRowId=1-N9YP

Let us know if you have any specific questions regarding other avenues of research, and please inform us of your results. We love to hear what people learn about their veteran ancestors.

Thank you for the advice and links. I do know my GGrandfather was wounded in the arm at Antietem so, this may be a good way to get additional information related to his injury. I will let you know what I find. Jim

Signed up for Fold3 and when looking for the service records for the state of New York, only the index cards of the service records are available. I assume this means the additional pages are not on Fold3 but, does this also mean I cannot order the additional pages from the National Archives?? Thanks, Jim

Jim, I'm not positive but I believe that it might mean that the NY CSR's have not yet been entered into Fold3. I don't have membership yet in Fold3 but I just did a search for a GGGrandfather in the 142nd NY Infantry on the site and only came up with a couple of census listings and the pension file index. However, I got his complete CSR from the National Archives. Nice thing about the archives is you aren't charged if they don't find the record. You can get the record either as paper (xerox) copies or as .pdf files on a CD, so choose whatever format with which you're most comfortable.

Fold3, however, should still be very helpful in hunting down other records for your target ancestor in the 23rd NY and for any other ancestors you want to research (they have WWI and WWII records, too, in addition to lots of other stuff.)

Regarding the wounding of your ancestor at Antietam, the CSR might contain some great data for you. From the CSRs of my Civil War ancestors I learned about one's detachment to the Pioneer Corps for a short period, about the hospitalization and cause of death for two, the arrest and release of another, and so on. I think the CSR is worth the money, but doesn't necessarily provide all the answers. For example, the CSR on my GGGrandfather which mentioned the arrest didn't list the reason. Through some in-depth Google searches I discovered, in a thesis discussing the diary of his Company captain, that my ancestor was tried (he was acquitted of all charges) at court martial along with a small group for some violence while they were policing draft riots in Wisconsin.

If you don't mind sharing your ancestor's name and home town/county, we can give you some assistance tracking down other info while you consider ordering his CSR. Meanwhile, keep digging, don't give up, and good luck.

Oh, and Happy New Year!

Thank you and Happy New Year to you as well. My GGrandfather is John F French of "G" company of NY 23rd Regiment. Jim

Sorry forgot to include information related to home. He enlisted May 9th, 1861 at Hornellsville, NY and discharged March 19th, 1863 at Fort Schuyler, NY. I believe he was from Cameron New York.
