The color guard of the 23rd Ohio Infantry. Initially assigned to the Ninth Corps, they saw action at South Mountain, Antietam, Second Kernstown, The Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Third Winchester, Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek. Two future presidents served with the 23rd, Major Rutherford B. Hayes and enlisted man William McKinley. The regiment lost a total of 5 officers and 154 enlisted men killed, and 1 officer and 130 enlisted men from disease, for a total of 290.
