Spring is a couple months away. What sites are you looking to visit this year?

Last year I had Antietam, 1864 Shenandoah battles, and Chickamauga on my list. I didn't make it to Chickamauga, but the western sites aren't always feasible for me.

This year, I'm looking at:

Gettysburg (if they are done with the LRT work -- I haven't been in a few years)
Appomattox (also haven't been in a few years)
Chickamauga (finally)

Chickamauga with Dave Powell and Jim Ogden next week
Piedmont with Scott Patchan as part of the SVBF Congress meetings in April.
Perryville in May or June (maybe a mini-muster; pm me if interested)
Nashville or Streight's Raid in October.
Hunter's 1864 Valley Campaign in November (BGES led by Patchan)
Cleburne sites in late June (BGES)

Ah, the joys of semi-retirement!

Unfortunately, my travel this year will probably be limited due to family health issues. It does not appear that there will be a CivilWarTalk Muster this year. Until the Fall, I'll probably be limited to some cemetery visits here in Texas and the Annual Jefferson Civil War Symposium in August. I have a few sites that I have not visited in Gulf Coast states within driving distance in mind for September or October. If it becomes at all possible for me to be at the 160th Anniversary in Franklin, I will be there.

Little Round Top is rumored to be open late spring or early summer.

In the next month or two I'm planning to do a couple little known tours in Kentucky and Indiana. Most notably having just read a detailed account of the Newburgh Raid in Indiana. I'm going to go retrace those steps.

I'm also going to do the Battle of Sacramento driving tour in western Kentucky.

Mardi Gras break allowed me to venture off earlier than normal this year. I've visited the following over the past few weeks:
-Vicksburg
-Port Hudson
-Camp Moore

I plan to visit the following this spring/summer:
-Mansfield/Pleasant Hill
-Fort Jackson (if open)
-Fort Massachusetts
-Blakeley/Fort Gaines/Fort Morgan/the rest of the Mobile defenses
-I also hope to retrace Butler's Lafourche Campaign and Banks' Teche Campaign as best as I can

And if I can convince the wife:
-Shiloh/Corinth
-Stones River

Since I am doing the Rocky Mountaineer train ride in Canada in June, having to curtial some of my CW travels. But looking at two BGES tours, Hunter in the Valley with Scott Patchan and Albert Sydney Johnston with Tim Smith (one in Oct and one in November). would like to do the mini-muster but with the train trip, that will depend on when it is scheduled.

I'm sure it's long gone but I'd also like to tour Old Indianola (Texas) and see where Fort Esparanza stood before 2 hurricanes erased the town and fort over a century ago.

I mentioned Chickamauga, but I also still need to make it to Stones River/Franklin/Nashville or Atlanta battles yet. Once I hit those, I'll have seen pretty much all the major sites in the country.

We spend much of our "free" time in Gettysburg. I thought retirement would bring sufficient free time to do what is on a long bucket list. But it seems that many previously postponed projects and smaller projects infringe on what was originally declared free time. Working on two manuscripts and research for them, artwork, genealogy projects, normal household stuff preparing for trout season, tying flies, wanting to metal detect more...where does the time go???

This month, I'm taking the wife to Washington DC. Unlike other trips I've tried to work out, plane tickets are bought, hotel booked and my job is pretty good about time off unless you don't have enough time accumulated (which I do).

Much will depend upon what she allows. It's for her birthday and her stuff takes priority. However, we will for certain be visiting Ford's Theatre and Arlington Cemetery.

My miliary history convention this year is in Maine so even if I add a couple days to the trip, about the only Civil War site will be the Joshua Chamberlain House and Museum. I would love to do an additional trip more related to the Civil War, but that may depend on the health of my wife.

If you have time I recommend the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. It's just 15 minutes east of the Chamberlain House.
