2023 CWT Muster- and beyond

Some more of day 3 at Oak Hill with Phil Muskett and Carringtons battery

Looking from Oak Hill towards Chambersburg Pike in the distance, with the unfinished railroad cut and Mc Pherson's ridge. It was across these fields that the Mississippians and North Carolinaians of Davis (CSA), Rodes (CSA) and Daniel (CSA) brigade attacked right to left. You can easily see the swells that "hid" the men of those brigades as they advanced.

A very special treat-Location of Carrington's battery, east of Barlow's Knoll, with me holding the sword of Gen Turner Ashby. I know Hal's heart must have been in his throat, as we held and passed the sword around- but what a special moment- Thanks, Hal for allowing us to do that!!!!!

Day 4 continued at the Cross Keys/Widow Pence farm- the fence line marks the Confederate lines (facing to the right) on the Widow Pence farm.

Day 4 just down the road in Port Republic. This is the site of the wartime bridge that Stonewall Jackson crossed to narrowly escape capture. Pilings still exist but are hidden by the foliage.

This is Madison Hall in Port Republic. It served as Jackson's HQ just before the battle of Port Republic.

At Port Republic, this it the view of the battlefield from " the coaling". The coaling was used by union artillery to fire on the Confederate battle lines. One of the units attacking the coaling was Wheat's Louisiana Tigers.

The Ohio monument at 3rd Winchester- it was my understanding this is a fairly new addition.

CORRECTION: The previous set of photos at 3rd Winchester were actually taken on Friday, not Saturday. On day 7, the real saturday we ventured down to Fisher's Hill, Bowan's Ford and Cedar Creek.

From Bowman's Mill Ford we journeyed to the Belle Grove plantation at Cedar Creek, where we had lunch and then we split into two groups, one explored the plantation, the other went and toured union entrenchments. I will let you guess which one I did. Afterwards we all went for a first ever tour of the Miller House, recently acquired by the SVBT.

And to finish up the formal muster on sunday afternoon, we visited the New Market Battlefield area, pictured are the Bushong farm and the VMI New Market museum (with the statue of Stonewall Jackson that was formerly in front of VMI).

Walk out the backdoor (or should I say maindoor) of the Seminary museum and this is what greets you in mid-October.

After leaving the Seminary museum, we re-drove Confederate Ave, and after some 60+ years and dozens of visits to Gettysburg- I finally made it to Sachs bridge!
