I was born in New York City on October 16, 1840. I served proudly in the 22nd New York State Militia/National Guard at Harpers Ferry and Gettysburg. That's me in the picture back in 1862 at Harpers Ferry – the tall lad, just below the sign.

Later I was Major in the 55th New York National Guard. I was one of the lucky ones - one of roughly 2.5 million soldiers who survived the Civil War. Returning to New York, I became a successful lawyer. I am perhaps best known for the manner of my death, which occurred in 1912. Who am I and how did I die?

Corporal George B. Goldschmidt died April 15, 1912 as sea as a casualty of the sinking of Titanic.

One of the lucky ones, eh? George B Goldschmidt died on the Titanic in 1912, presumed drowned

Oh, they built the ship Titanic, to sail the ocean blue.
For they thought it was a ship that water would never go through.
It was on its maiden trip, that an iceberg hit the ship.
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Chorus:
It was sad, so sad.
It was sad, so sad.
It was sad when the great ship went down (to the bottom of the....)
Uncles and aunts, little children lost their pants.
It was sad when the great ship went down

George B. Goldschmidt, who died when the "Titanic" sunk.

Judging from the question and particularly the title (!), he went down with the Titanic. In April 1912, he would have been 71 years old. Looking at the wikipedia article, "Passengers of RMS Titanic," I found one 71-year-old man from New York in the first class passenger list (I also checked the second class list, and assumed that a successful lawyer would not have been traveling third class). Here he is: George B. Goldschmidt, and his biography is here: http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/titanic-victim/george-goldschmidt.html The details fit! "George Goldschmidt died in the sinking. His body, if recovered, was never identified." [emphasis mine]

This was a fun puzzle, starting with the Titanic and working backwards!
