When my kids were younger, they would stay at my Grandmother's house for the summer in Eagle River MI, about 40 minutes from Ft Wilkins. I often said I would one day retire to become one of the three permanently assigned staff to live in the barracks year round at Ft Wilkins.Although I live in Lansing, Michigan I could drive to New York City in less time than I could drive to Fort Wilkins, Michigan.
Do not know if they do any reenactments at the Fort anymore but if anyone plans on making the trek about 12 hours north west from Detroit, be prepared. July and August temps in the high 60's low 70's during the day and mid to upper 30's at night. If you suddenly find yourself warm during the night it is no doubt on account of one of the numerous 400 pound UP black bears snuggling up with you in your bedroll. Also, beware the state bird, the Horse Fly, which descends like a cloud of devouring raptors at the first sign of wood smoke and grilling meats.
